This is a purely academic article dedicated to marital relationships in India. At no point of time , have I endeavoured to bring in personal viewpoints or prjudices whatsoever.
Much has been written about relationships, marital relationships in our country. Reams and mbs have been devoured to explain different perspectives on a subject thats as brutally been discussed and used as icon of worlds first ever profession !!
what i feel needs to be delved more in a cross cultural country like India, is the Viability and Impact of Inter religios marriages on indian society and more importantly, the couple !
In a rapidly changing views and opinions , the perspectives and judgements of Indians have undergone a virtual split i feel, generically talking. a) people who're still conservative and for who marrying without parental concent is a blasphemy.!
b) people whore ok with self marital decisions but still hold several reservations with respect to caste, creed, econoic differences and last bt not the least, the religion.
This Blog is dedicated to this topic and people who're doing their best in tabboing the inter religion marriages.
sadly enough , as i have observed such individuals arent only representing the tribes and ghettos of their respective religion. Chivalry , chauvinism, hypocracy is something i have personally observed breeding amongst such individuals faster than the multiplication of domestic rats !
on the contrary these are the people from what we call the higher income group or SEC A as we call them in marketing terminology !
In my numourous discussions and friendly meetings with people from each religion, i explored almost all of them portrayed themselves as epitome or an icon of universal fraternity ! hindus, christians, muslims, sikhs, and what have you. But deep within all seem to be nurturing a concept of seperatism or ghettoism as you may like it. I have seen this happening so unabashedly here in India. In a society that can easily be given as an ' elite segment' colloquily !
I think i have seen from too close a distance and i do posess the right to express the facts that rattle silently deep withing all inter religious matters, cause i am married to a girl from a different religion myself ! Any way let's move ahead leaving trivial personal observation behing and get on with some serious observations.
Home and the World: A Study of Inter-Religious Marriages in India A widely held belief about modernization and globalization is that these processes lessen/blur the private/public divide, promote higher levels of interaction between people of different ethno-religious groups and leads to the emancipation of women. At the same time, recent evidence from around the world point to the resurgence of ethno-religious movements which lead to the 'hardening' of boundaries between groups and which often use 'woman's behavior' as the primary mechanism of upholding 'tradition'. While much of the scholarly research on these questions focus on the level of ethnic groups and nation states, I study the consequences of these mechanisms at the level of the family by focussing specifically on inter- religious marriages. Inter-religious marriages allow me to explore issues of boundaries and the roles of families in hindering and fostering such boundary crossing. The content for this blog is drawn from a larger observation. Introduction Feminist scholars have constantly stressed that families must be understood within the broader societal rather than be treated simply as micro-level household interactions. Feminism, has challenged conventional research on families which treats families as more or less closed units that can be understood in isolation from other social institutions, such as politics or the economy. The new feminist scholarship that has emerged firstly defines families as fully integrated to wider systems of economic and political power and secondly recognizes the diverging and sometimes conflicting interests of each member. Based on the feminist model of family, the principal aim of my study is to try and uncover some of the less obvious factors that underlie the antipathy of families towards inter-religious marriage. An attempt is made to examine the reasons for the same and argue that they are not always as simple as they seem Both the family and the larger society negatively sanction marriages of persons with mixed religious backgrounds. Intermarriage signals a sharp break from the past. In spite of India being a nation with a highly diverse population, most personal prejudices and social sanctions lend control to enforcement of endogamous unions.
As a result people who intermarry are generally viewed as unconventional and rebellious. But, although we would like to think of intermarriage and willingness to accept the non-traditional as purely an individual matter, it actually takes place within a context of family and societal pressures. Family interventions are the greatest hurdles to scale for couples contemplating or entering intermarriage. These hurdles translate into fierce conflicts with the parents and sometimes severance of family ties, secret dating to prevent the parents from knowing, prolonged engagement periods, periods of guilt, unfriendly relations and unpleasant situations when family members got together for holidays, weddings, funerals, were outcroppings of family disapproval. Thus, family objections pose the main obstacle and create the most problems in a mixed union. All kinds of obstructionist tactics are brought to bear to prevent the marriage and family relations are strained and even severed. My very personal experience reveals that the opposition from parents begins from the phase of courtship itself, continues at the time of the marriage ceremony, and in some cases the hostility continues even after marriage. Various reasons are given for condemning inter-religious marriages .to justify the parental stand regardless of being a hindu or christian or a muslim. The So called pseodosecularism and openmindedness takes a shameless backburner with utter disregard to religion , it's connection with matters of heart, togetherness and love. .( to be continued)..
